Year 5, Issue 4

It is available on the island of Ischia the July 2014 issue (4-year V) of the Magazine "Ischianews & Eventi"

The History of the island of Ischia is inextricably linked to its religiosity. This is an “old” island where the civilized man came from Greece since the eighth century BC and is no longer gone. Just as Christianity has arrived earlier than elsewhere. Restituta - the patron saint of the island - came from the sea brought by the sirocco wind on a boat from the shores of Tunisia since the fourth century after Christ. Since then she is worshiped in the temple of Lacco Ameno and all the houses of "ischioti" as Berkeley called them in the eighteenth century. The history is mixed with myth.

Even the Diocese of Ischia is one of the oldest in Italy although perhaps smaller. The first bishop was called Pietro, and the meager news about him dating back to the twelfth century. For centuries, the Church was for the "islanders", as they are called today, a "person of the family, which was necessary to provide like the others, his wife, his mother, his children", as said Bishop Pasquale Polito (1907 -1994).

On the island there are now seventy-nine places of Christian worship among churches, shrines and oratories rich in precious signs of devotion that the faithful have erected over the centuries so that journalist Ciro Cenatiempo called it the "island of miracles" because they are "temples of the spirit, set in environmental and cultural scenery absolutely unique".

It is a mix between “sacred and profane that helped to create the identity of Ischia”. Many churches and so many saints to which they are devoted to different communities of the island. Every small community has its church, its patron saint, and the feast in his honor. If the churches are just as many 79 or maybe more are the patronal feasts which represent the authentic ‘local color’.

July is the month of St. Anne, mother of Mary, the Mother par excellence that protects pregnant women. It is celebrated not only in Ischia Ponte - the ancient Borgo di Celsa - with the celebration on the sea, which is the most important festival in the summer of the island, which this year has many new features as we announce in this issue, but also in Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola and in the fraction of Fiaiano in Barano.

“The island of Anna” is the title of the July issue (4 - year V) of the Magazine “Ischianews & Eventi” magazine-guide of the “green island” in Italian and English directed by Enrico Deuringer with the collaboration of Giuseppe Mazzella and co-manager of the editorship by Tommaso Massimo Pilato.

For centuries, the births of children took place in the homes of women giving birth with the assistance only if there was, the “midwife” as it was called the midwife and then the cult of St. Anne was very strong everywhere. The infant mortality was very high in the families of farmers and fishermen, the populace of island. This worship has remained and has not been cleared by modernity.

The “miracle of life” remains locked in mystery attached to rocks to which the islanders have given the name of Anna in the most beautiful place on the island.

“Ischianews & Eventi” shows the final events of the twelfth edition of Ischiafilmfestival this year chaired by director Pupi Avati with screenings, exhibitions, conferences, which are held in the Aragonese Castle in the ancient village of Celsa from June 28 to July 5.
